Step Code Consulting

We provide support and direction to team with regard to sustainable design strategies, particularly related to airtight design and construction and energy conservation. We provide the documentation required for submission to the authority having jurisdiction.
Energy Modeling
The BC Energy Step Code requires buildings to achieve specific levels of performance in three key metrics: Thermal Energy Demand Intensity (TEDI), Total Energy Use Intensity (TEUI) and Air Tightness. At the development permit stage, designers will be required to use energy modelling to confirm that the proposed development meets the relevant community’s BC Energy Step Code performance targets. We have successfully completed over 200 energy models and can prepare an energy model to show compliance with the Step Code.
Air Leakage Testing
The Step Code requires buildings to achieve a specific level of air tightness. This is done by conducting Air Leakage Testing during construction. We have experienced staffs that can conduct the air leakage testing and provide compliance report.

Green Building Best Practices
Rather than conforming to a single “green” rating system, this scope of work focuses on sustainability best practices. It allows the design team to work within a methodology free of constraints or “point-chasing”, and simply to make the best decisions for the project’s needs. We prepare sustainability roadmap for projects with the focus on strategies that accrue value to the owner such as waste management, water conservation, quality of indoor environment, reduced maintenance, and improved energy performance.

What is Step Code?
In April 2017, the Province of British Columbia adopted the BC Energy Step Code as a series of amendments to the Building Act and the Local Government Act. The standard consists of a series of steps, representing increasing levels of energy-efficiency performance. By adopting one or more steps of the standard, local governments and builders can increase building performance requirements in their communities.
